Teen Intensive – Dance Makers | Summer 2023

Beginners welcome!
At least 1 session of dance class in any style recommended

In Dance Makers Camp (12+) we will be learning basic choreographic strategies in dance making, and work towards showing a collaborative piece at the end of the camp session. Students will each take turns being the main choreographer for a section of the dance, in a safe and welcoming environment. No previous choreographic experience necessary!

Class will be divided into: modern/contemporary/ jazz style warm up technique class, improvisational sessions, viewing famous pieces in dance history, choreography experiments and exercises, and working towards a dance making performance

Students will learn to cultivate their choreographic voice with experimentation in site specific pieces, audience placement, text and music, and various structured choreography strategies.

All of the tools to create a dance will be provided in class, no need to bring any pre-choreographed material!

Please bring: comfortable clothes that you can move in, clothes you can move outside in the grass in, snacks and water!

12:00-1:00 warm up/ technique

1:00-1:15 snack/water break

1:15-1:40 improvisation

1:40-2:00 dance history

2:00-3:00 choreography experimentation and creation

Friday at 3:00 an informal showing of our created piece at 171 Cedar Arts Center

In the event of unforeseen circumstances, 171 reserves the right to make any necessary changes to our summer camp programming or to cancel a session due to low enrollment.
