Instructor: Anthony Curren, Michael Flanagan

In this week-long camp with Anthony Curren and Mike Flanagan, students will explore fantasy worlds, encounter characters, and develop their own characterization, identity, and improvisational skills. This camp will foster creativity and imagination, and perhaps create a standing game for players, or an opportunity to work behind the Dungeon Master’s Screen. We will discuss character motivation, logic, and action within the context of setting and group dynamics. Students will approach improvisational scenes as a party of adventurers and will explore the things that make a character more interesting. We will also work on writing and creating fantasy settings, in order to generate interesting and inhabitable worlds. Students will learn to write and perform in the capacity of a dungeon master and will explore creative, written, and performing arts.

Our students will start by learning the rules and playable classes in the game. We then begin building characters as a group. We discuss motivations, flaws, traits, ideals, etc. We create biographies and backstories, and we establish where their character fits in this world. We move on to creating plot, tension, action, and scene work. We discuss building fantasy worlds, settings, and unique locations. We will discuss materials and equipment necessary for recording adventures, and briefly cover editing and uploading videos. We practice writing adventures, and finally we wrap by playing a real life game.

Students will leave with a well-rounded fantasy character to use in future games, and a better understanding and ability to build characters.

In the event of unforeseen circumstances, 171 reserves the right to make any necessary changes to our summer camp programming or to cancel a session due to low enrollment.
