This class will focus on **contemporary dance floor warm-ups and technique with Sage Ulrich. These warmups focus on fluidity and connection, helping the quality of your dancing become smoother, sequential, and more connected. Gain confidence in choreography on the floor! Learn to fall safely and transition seamlessly from floor to standing. The support of the floor will help inform your dancing in standing.

This class will also be an introduction to choreographic process. Students will be led through exercises to generate movement phrases. We will work as a group to generate material, create phrases, and place them in the space. This is a safe, non-judgmental, and beginner-choreographer friendly space.

Contemporary Floor Work & Choreographic Process will work towards creating a recital piece to perform in May. This piece will be predominantly guided through and generated by the instructor, but working collaboratively as a class. Every student will gain co-choreographer credits in the May recital program for their participation.

Modern Intermediate is the minimum recommended level for this class.

**Contemporary dance is an evolution of ballet and modern dance. It also incorporates elements of non-western dance cultures, such as African dance or Butoh (Japanese contemporary). Contemporary dance can be characterized by contract-release, floor work, fall and recovery, rhythm, speed, and direction. Contemporary dance pushes the boundaries of what can be considered dance through pedestrian movements, experimenting with silence, drawing from acting gestures.
