In this exhibit, Julie Thurber explores women’s history using the garments worn closest to their skin. These altered intimates represent the public display of a starched and pressed household, laundry hung in one’s backyard. Through the use of dyes and stitching, she documents the manner in which women have been regarded in our society. You are invited to touch and examine these pieces for an intimate encounter with our tightly laced past and ask yourself if we still have some “dirty laundry” to address.
